Matthew scowled as Miranda and Ethan entered the big room on Sunday evening.

"That is a sad mockery of the blue sweater," he complained.

Miranda paused, looking down at herself. "This is the exact same blue sweater."

Matthew frowned.

"It's not how you remember it?" She asked, trying not to be disappointed by his obvious disappointment.

"I guess not. It looked different before. Not as loose."

"I was twenty-five pounds heavier then," Miranda reminded him.

Matthew's frown deepened. "Yeah, remember when you ate food and you didn't look like a skeleton surrounded by skin? Those days were fun."

"Stop that, right now," Darla scolded. "You will not pick on her! What is wrong with you? I raised you better than—"

"I'm not picking on her!" Matthew objected.

"Sounded like you were picking on her," Ethan disagreed.

"It's okay," Miranda muttered, looking at the floor as her eyes filled with unshed tears.

"Gah! She's going to cry. You're an asshole!" Jake yelled at Matthew, then flinched, catching his own lousy language. "Sorry."

"That one gets by on a technicality of truth," Darla declared, still glaring at Matthew.

"I'm not picking on her! Miranda, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to pick on you. It just came out. You look so different now, though. I have not yet adjusted to this version of you—so timid and fragile. I can't believe it's the same sweater. Still, I shouldn't have said it. The words were out before I thought about it," Matthew apologized.

"I know," she muttered, trying to hide that she was wiping at tears. "I always liked this sweater, too. And I miss grilled cheese sandwiches."

"Grilled cheese?" Matty asked.

"Yeah. On a good sourdough, where the bread is toasted on the outside and buttery wonderful on the inside. You know? Grilled cheese?" Miranda asked, distracted.

"Butter inside? What?" Adrian asked, brow furrowed.

Miranda looked around the confused faces eyeing her. "Butter on the inside of the sandwich."

"I've never pitied you before this moment," Luke replied, straight-faced. "Butter on the outside for toasting, Miranda."

"Oh no," she said, her voice more firm than usual. "Very light layer of mayonnaise on the outside facing side of the bread. A very light layer of butter on the inside facing side of the bread. The mayonnaise does something amazing while toasting and doesn't leave a mayo flavor at all. The sandwich crisps better and still has a wonderful butter flavor."

The family stared at her in shocked silence before turning in unison to Darla.

"I've never tried it," Darla admitted somewhat apologetically.

"I'm with Miranda on this," Emma said. "Once you go mayo, there's no going back."

Will jerked in surprise. "How could you not tell me this before now?"

Emma's mouth dropped open before she started shaking with laughter. "It's a secret passed down from generation to generation. If you weren't in the know, it wasn't my place..."

William's lips twitched. "Okay, I didn't mean for that to come out so accusatory. But, this seems like something we should come to a consensus on before the kids arrive."

"What is the appropriate type of cheese for a grilled cheese sandwich?" Emma asked, eyes narrowed in suspicion.
